Why Is My Heat Pump Not Heating?

The common reasons a running heat pump stops delivering hot water.

01

Refrigerant charge loss

The most frequent cause of gradually worsening performance. A slow leak reduces capacity long before the unit stops entirely. Regassing without repairing the leak simply resets the clock.

02

Airflow restriction

A coil fouled with dust, pollen or coastal salt cannot absorb heat. Performance falls, pressures drift and the unit may lock out. This is preventable with routine cleaning.

03

Water side problems

If the circulation pump fails or a valve is closed, the heat pump heats a small trapped volume of water and the tank stays cold. Always worth checking after other plumbing work has been done.

04

Sensors and set-points

A drifted sensor makes the controller believe the tank is hotter than it is. Cheap to fix, easy to miss.
