Longer recovery
Water taking noticeably longer to heat is usually the first sign of charge loss or a fouled coil.
New noises
Bearing whine, rattling or a change in vibration means something mechanical is wearing.
Running more often
A unit cycling more than usual is either losing heat, losing charge, or working against restricted airflow or flow rate.
Occasional trips
Intermittent breaker or earth leakage trips almost always become permanent failures. Have them investigated while the unit still works.
Ice on the coil
Persistent icing outside a normal defrost cycle indicates airflow, charge or defrost control problems.
