Dependence on conditions
Solar collectors need sunlight and perform poorly through consecutive overcast winter days, which the Cape gets. A heat pump works from ambient air and runs at night, so output is far more predictable, though it does draw electricity whenever it runs.
Roof and space requirements
Solar needs suitable roof orientation and structural capacity for collectors and often a roof-mounted tank. A heat pump needs an outdoor position with good airflow and an acceptable noise position, which is often easier on apartments and heritage properties.
Combining both
The two are not mutually exclusive. Solar collectors with a heat pump handling the shortfall is a valid arrangement on high-demand properties, though it increases complexity and maintenance points.
