How to Choose a Heat Pump

Capacity, configuration and serviceability matter more than the headline figure on the box.

01

Start with demand

Number of occupants, bathrooms, usage times and simultaneous demand determine capacity and tank size. Guest houses and gyms have sharp peaks that a household-sized system cannot cover.

02

Integrated or split

Integrated units combine tank and heat pump in one appliance, which suits new installations with space. Split systems retain or add a separate cylinder and suit retrofits and constrained plant positions.

03

Placement and noise

The unit needs unobstructed airflow and a position where fan noise is acceptable — to you and to neighbours or trustees. This constraint often decides the specification.

04

Serviceability and parts

Ask whether parts are available locally and whether the unit can be accessed for coil cleaning and gauge connection. Equipment that cannot be serviced properly does not last.
